CBC Live Right Now Success Story - David Arsenault

David Arsenault

David Arsenault

Active for Life shared this story about Athletic Community Centres (ACC) in Dorval and its founder David Arsenault.

Name: David Arsenault, professional trainer and president of Athletic Community Centres.
I'm part of: Athletic Community Centres (ACC) in Dorval, QC.
#1 Health Goal: Through ACC, my goal is to deliver quality physical literacy programs to children and youth in our community. Working with local sport organizations, ACC aims to spread understanding of the principles behind Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and being "active for life" so kids get the right start in sport.
Biggest Challenge: When it comes to children who are active in sports, there is a big gap between coaches and parents who understand the Active For Life philosophy and those who are still treating children like miniature elite athletes. At the same time, inactive children and their parents are being turned off sport because of over-zealous coaches and parents who live vicariously through their children.

My biggest challenge is developing programs that dissolve the lines between these active and inactive children, while encouraging all of them to become active for life. We try to close the gap between the active and inactive kids by showing everyone a "middle path" of physical literacy for all.
Biggest Accomplishment: Seeing the smile on the faces of children and teens who participate in our sessions. We have gone from less than 100 participants in our first year to over 600 in our third year of operation.
ACC wants to help Canadians to Live Right Now by: We have transformed unused spaces at John Rennie High School and the City of Dorval into functional training facilities, and we are exploring new opportunities elsewhere. We are spreading the Active For Life philosophy by delivering quality physical literacy programs at these facilities, as well as strength and conditioning training.
Personal Tip for Canadians: If you are a school or a municipal recreation department, look for opportunities to revitalize some of your existing spaces to deliver inclusive programs in physical literacy. Along the way, get more kids involved by breaking down the perception that sport is just for elite athletes.

ACC Joins the Dorval Day Camp

Dorval Day Camp - Athletic Program
The Dorval Day Camp has now partnered with Athletic Community Centres (ACC) to offer a program which will allow campers to explore and build confidence in various movement exercises (physical literacy) and sports games while developing fundamental sports skills in a FUN and recreational setting.  Children who explore a variety of activities have more potential to maintain healthy active living practices throughout their lives which in turns increases the pool of athletes in the  community that may go on to higher levels of athletic performance.

ACC Therapy

Athletic Community Centres (ACC) is now offering affordable “Therapy Services” to John Rennie High School students at convenient times and locations. These services are designed to assess, treat, and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries in order to return the athlete quickly, and safely to play and practice. The therapist will employ a systematic approach to identify instabilities, weaknesses, and asymmetries throughout the body in order to return balance and stability.  Results from the evaluations and treatments will be communicated to coaches and parents via email.

*Healthy Students can also perform an evaluation to identify instabilities that may lead to injury, followed by a program to address major weaknesses.  Not only will athletes benefit from an injury prevention standpoint, but it will also improve performance in their respective sports.

What is ACC

The Athletic Community Centres (ACC) is a non-profit organization which provides knowledge and services related to the fitness and strength and conditioning industry to various communities.

The ACC collaborates with municipalities, schools, organizations, and businesses, in order to help Canadians improve their overall health and athleticism through sustainable, collaborative, and innovative Athletic Training Programs.

The ACC's goals are in line with and supports the Canadian Sport For Live Movement, it's Long Term Athlete Development Model, and other organizations such as Participaction, and Active For Life

Athletic Training consists mainly of working on abilities that include balance, coordination, flexibility, strength, endurance, and speed in as many ways as possible.  At the early stages, this means to develop Physical Litteracy, and later on it would mean to optimize these abilities.
