Active for Life shared this story about Athletic Community Centres (ACC) in Dorval and its founder David Arsenault. Name: David Arsenault, professional trainer and president of Athletic Community Centres.
I'm part of: Athletic Community Centres (ACC) in Dorval, QC.
#1 Health Goal: Through ACC, my goal is to deliver quality physical literacy programs to children and youth in our community. Working with local sport organizations, ACC aims to spread understanding of the principles behind Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and being "active for life" so kids get the right start in sport.
Biggest Challenge: When it comes to children who are active in sports, there is a big gap between coaches and parents who understand the Active For Life philosophy and those who are still treating children like miniature elite athletes. At the same time, inactive children and their parents are being turned off sport because of over-zealous coaches and parents who live vicariously through their children.
My biggest challenge is developing programs that dissolve the lines between these active and inactive children, while encouraging all of them to become active for life. We try to close the gap between the active and inactive kids by showing everyone a "middle path" of physical literacy for all.
Biggest Accomplishment: Seeing the smile on the faces of children and teens who participate in our sessions. We have gone from less than 100 participants in our first year to over 600 in our third year of operation.
ACC wants to help Canadians to Live Right Now by: We have transformed unused spaces at John Rennie High School and the City of Dorval into functional training facilities, and we are exploring new opportunities elsewhere. We are spreading the Active For Life philosophy by delivering quality physical literacy programs at these facilities, as well as strength and conditioning training.
Personal Tip for Canadians: If you are a school or a municipal recreation department, look for opportunities to revitalize some of your existing spaces to deliver inclusive programs in physical literacy. Along the way, get more kids involved by breaking down the perception that sport is just for elite athletes.
